Modelled In Plastic
TJLASTIC scale models are being used by Chevrolet engineers in the United States to test new vehicle ideas. Before a new vehicle reaches the prototype stage, the engineers build the plastic models and test them. Because of research into the relationships between the properties of certain plastics and automotive steels, test results can give accurate predictions of how the prototype will perform.
The tests give important information on loadings and stresses and help engineers select the best positions for components. A lib load on the plastic models is equal to a 4251 b load on the full-sized car, the engineers say. Dynamic testing is done by attaching small electric vibrators to various parts of the model.
The photograph shows the plastic Male model used, by engineers .in the design of the Chevrolet Camaro.
