More Virus Infections

Respiratory viral infections were increasing as were cases of middle ear infection and acute tonsillitis in the four weeks ending on August 4, according to a summary of returns from Christchurch doctors to the research committee of the Canterbury faculty of the College of General Practitioners. Respiratory infections numbered 457, middle ear infections 130 and acute tonsilitis 193.

Doctors reported 46 cases of mild diarrhoea and vomiting that affected all ages and lasted from one to three days. There were 22 cases of chicken-pox, 26 of mumps, and six of whooping cough. Returns from 53 doctors, one fewer than in the previous four-week period, showed an Increase in cases of illness from 948 to 1112.
