DOUBTFUL STARTER
“The Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND. Crystal John was declared yesterday by one of his trainers, L. J. Bayer, a doubtful starter in the Ohaupo Handicap at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting on Tuesday night.
Bayer, who trains in partnership with J. K. Hughes, said Crystal John had developed a cold since he competed at barrier trials at Alexandra Park on Tuesday.
Crystal John shaped impressively at the trials and seamed certain to be heavily backed. With a large number of Pukekohe candidates for Cambridge having competed at the trials, there was little fast work yesterday.
Selena, the likely favourite for the Twilight Handicap at Cambridge, will be driven by P. T. Wolfenden.
J. Bond, formerly of Invercargill, will handle two of L. J. Bayer and J. K. Hughes’s team, Gerrand" and Ricksaw. The others will be driven by T. H. Knowles (McKay and Dover Eden).
Bond, who is 28, has joined the Bayer-Hughes stable. He will do a good deal of the driving. With limited opportunities, he had five wins last season, when he was with Tactile’s former trainer, D. P. Dynes. He was employed by Dynes for seven years.
