“$200 A WEEK FROM EELS”
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, August 29.
Farmers with streams or rivers running through their properties could be making $2OO a week or more by catching eels, according to Mr H. Teklenburg, of Te Kauwhata, who runs what he claims is the only eel-processing and exporting company in the North Island.
“We can easily sell on the overseas markets 10 times as many eels as we are exporting at present,” Mr Teklenburg said. “AU the eels that we smoke, tin, freeze, or jelly are exported all over the world, particularly to Europe, the United States, and Canada.
“We get such a good price for them overseas we don’t sell them in New Zealand.” Mr Teklenburg, however, said he was not interested in South Island eels. Only 25 to 30 per cent of eels in the North Island were suitable for export, especially to the Continental market, where eels were more expensive than salmon.
“Processing eels correctly is a very skilled trade,” said Mr Teklenburg.
