Important Game For Hornby

Hornby’s hold on the major prizes in Canterbury Rugby league, already weakened by its loss in the major championship and Gore Cup this- season, could suffer further when it meets Papanui in the Vivian Cup challenge at the Show Grounds tomorrow.

Hornby has held the Vivian Cup since it beat Linwood, 5-2, in 1962. Papanui earned the challenge because it was the leading team in the second round of the minor premiership. It will also meet Hornby, the holder since 1959, for the Barr Cup later in the season.

Papanui began Hornby’s run of defeats when it beat the leader, 15-12, in the opening club round this season. Papanui will be equally keen to win tomorrow after coming so close to major championship honours on Saturday.

In their two previous meet-

ings this season—Papanui also won the second, 17-6 A. W. Thompson (Papanui) has scored four tries, an impressive return for a forward in his first season of Rugby league against the club which has been champion since 19641 The Vivian Cup challenge will be the only senior game at the Show Grounds. The supporting fixtures will be the grand finals of the senior second division (Papanui v. Woolston). third division (Shirley v. Marist-Western Suburbs), and 17-year grade (Hornby v. Kaiapoi). The 19 years grand final, between Linwood and Eastern Suburbs, will be at Sydenham Park.
