POTATOES FOR AUST.

South Island potatoes are to be exported to Australia for processing.

A shipment for Melbourne will be taken by the Kaitpa, which is to sail from Lyttelton tomorrow.

The chairman of the Potato Board (Mr I. A. Baxter), said! yesterday that as it appeared there would be a surplus the: board had recommended to' the Government that export

should be permitted. It was difficult to say how big the surplus would be, but he did not think there would< be a big surplus of good No. 1 potatoes. Mr J. C. Paterson, general manager of the grain, seed and merchandise department of I Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd, which is exporting the potatoes going by the Kaitoa, said that the present shipment I would be of about 250 tons, but it could be more. Potatoes were being drawn

from other merchants as well as his own firm. It was hoped that trade in potatoes with Australia, particularly for processing, would become more regular. The photograph was taken on the Weedons property of Messrs L M. and N.M. Watson yesterday, when Ham Hardy potatoes were graded and bagged for the shipment before being taken to Rolleston.
