Obituary THE RT REV. T. McKEON
The Rt Rev. Thomas McKeon, a senior priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch, died at Calvary Hospital yesterday. Aged 71, he had been living in retirement at the Home of Compassion, Timaru, since February. Monsignor McKeon was born in Ireland and was educated at Mount Melleray, Waterford. He did his theological studies at St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, where he was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1923. After coming to New Zealand he took up his first appointment as assistant priest in the Addington parish in 1924. and was later assistant priest in the Greymouth and Cathedral parishes. He was appointed parish priest of Lyteelton in 1939, Timaru North in 1952, and Greymouth in 1964.
Monsignor McKeon was honoured by Pope Paul in February of this year with the rank of Domestic Prelate.
