Cyclists’ Right Turns

Last year there were 1142 accidents involving cyclists on New Zealand roads, the Transport Department says. In all 25 cyclists were killed and 1132 were injured. In about half these cases the cause of the accident was attributed to the cyclist In the other half the fault lay almost entirely with the motorist

Many-of the accident* occur red at intersections. From this it is evident that there must be many drivers and cyclists who are not aware of the correct proceedure for a cyclist to follow when making a right-hand turn at an interesection, the department says. The diagram shows how a cyclist should carry out a

right-turn manoeuvre in a 30 m.p.b. area. Accidents to cyclist* at Intersections will only be stopped when the cyclist* carry out the manoeuvre in • safe and uniform manner and when the motorist* are able to know what to expect from a cyclist at an intersection, the department says.
