CONSULAR POST
Mayor Will Not Resign
(N Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, August 27. The Mayor of Auckland (Dr R. G. McElroy) tonight declined to resign as French consular agent in Auckland at the request of the Auckland branch of the Seamen’s Union.
A telegram from the branch to the Mayor today said: ’’lf you are sincere on the Czechoslovakian issue we call on you to resign as French consul in Auckland on the ground that the French Government is exploding nuclear weapons on our back doorstep. This is also an act of aggression.” Dr MeElroy said that as a New Zealand citizen he associated himself with the protest made by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) on New Zealand's behalf about nuclear testing in the South Pacific. “If. in addition to that of the Prime Minister, anyone feels a further protest needs to be made through me as Mayor, I would, as Mayor, receive it and forward It to the French Government, either through the diplomatic representative in New Zealand, or the Prime Minister,” he said.
