BRILLIANT SKATING

The New Zealand roller skaters, G. E. Glover and Miss R. Alexander, returned more brilliant limes in their final races against the watch at Ruapuna Park last evening.

Both skaters had special time trials over 5000 metres before leaving for the world championships in Italy, and both came within 6sec of world records. What is more, both times were nearly 3min faster than the New Zealand records for the distance. Glover returned 7min 50sec—the world record set by L. Faggioli, of Italy, 11 years ago, is 7min 44.95ec. The New Zealand record, set at the trials at Nelson in May, is lOmin 24sec. Miss Alexander’s performance was fully parallel. She was timed at Bmin 34sec, and the national record is llmin 19sec. The world record, Bmin 28sec, was set last year by Marisa Danisi (Italy), who is expected to be one of Miss Alexander’s major opponents next month. Ther four skaters—D. Hayes and Miss M. Macdonald, are the others—and their manager, Mr R. Young, will leave Christchurch tomorrow.
