Pedestrian Behaviour
The Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee will try to arrange for a television programme on pedestrian behaviour.
Many Christchurch pedestrians did not seem to know how to behave when crossing roads, said the Automobile Association (Canterbury) representative (Mr J. R. Maling) at a meeting of the committee last evening. More education was needed Mr Maling said. It was particularly difficult for motorists when pedestrians stepped onto crossings and although cars stopped for them, many hesitated or stepped back on to the pavement. Mr D. B. Rich (Waimairi County Council) said the laws on pedestrians and pedestrian crossings were confusing. A television programme would help to educate pedestrians.
The chairman (Mr. N. H Browne) said there was an increasing tendency in Christchurch for pedestrians to cross the road against the traffic lights.
