Giri Of 16 Beats Table Tennis Champion

The national women’s singles champion, Miss D. L. Wade (Auckland), was surprisingly beaten by Miss M. Medley (North Taranaki), 19-21, 21-19, 15-21, 21-18, 21-14, during the second round of the national individual table tennis championships, at Cowles Stadium yesterday.

Miss Medley, who is only 16, used her forehand drive to full advantage.

Miss J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley) later beat Miss Medley, 21-10, 21-10, 21-15.

AH the seeded players in the men’s singles are through to the last 32 but B. T. Cross (Hutt Valley) was given a fright by the solid Canterbury player, J. E. Kyle in the first round. Cross won 32-30, 21-13, 21-13. The No. 1 seed in the men’s singles, B. A. Foster (Otago) had no difficulty reaching the last 32. He beat R. G. Lassen (Auckland), 21-14, 21-10, 21-17, and in the third round accounted for the University country player, S. A. Swanson, 21-12, 21-6, 21-7. Seven of the, last 32 in the men’s singles are from the South Island. They are J. Armstrong, Ling Nan Ming, V. N. Brightwell and R. Mitchell (Canterbury), Foster and G. B. Murphy (Otago) and B. J. P. McLauchlan (Hutt Valley) and J. T. Fisher (Auckland) both had excellent wins in the third round. McLauchlan beat B. J. Kennerley (Auckland) and Fisher beat F. R. Foster (Wellington). The Northland junior, J. Morris, who is still under 16, hit neatly to take the first game from the No. 4 seed, W. M. Borlase (Wellington) in the third round, but Borlase recovered well in the next three. Canterbury had three women in the last 16 In the singles. They are Mesdames T. May and V. M. Boulton and Miss J. E. Stead. Also in the last 16 from the South Island are the sister Y. M. and M. J. Fogarty (Otago) and the new South Island representative. Miss G.

Two seeded pairs in the open mixed doubles were eliminated in the fourth round last evening. The third seeds, Cross and Miss J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley), were beaten by the brother and sister team of K. T. and Miss C. M. O'Carroll (Northland) 21-23, 21-15, 21-14, 21-15, The Otago pair G. B. Murphy and Miss M. J. Fogarty beat the fifth seeds T. J. O'Carroll (Northland) and Mrs ,T. p. Boswell (Franklin), 14-21, 21-13 21-19, 21-13.

Juniors Succeed A favoured mixed doubles pair, M. A. Cox (Canterbury) and Miss A. J. Eden (Nelson) were beaten by the juniors, A. K. Joe (East Waikato) and Miss A. D. Johnson (Bay of Plenty), 21-18, 21-15, 16-21, 21-7 in the second round.

Miss M. Broadbent (Wanganui) seeded No. 7, in the women’s singles beat Mrs M. J. Brown (South Canterbury), 14-21, 21-12 21-15, in the final of the veteran's women's singles. She also won the veteran doubles with Mr.s E. I. Spooner (Wanganui), 16-21, 21-16, 21-19. These were the only finals to be decided on the first day. Ling Nan Ming was forced to work hard to beat the experienced K. L. Polnton (Hut Valley). 21-19, 16-21, 21-6, 13-21. 21-12, in the first round of the men's singles.

Strong Came F. H. Sargent (Canterbury) played well to beat the No. 2 seed in the veteran men's singles. J. L. Hall (Nelson). 21-18. 17-21, 21-18 in the second round.

Another Canterbury player J. A. Harliwich beat the No. 3 seed in the senior men's singles. N. W. Parsons (South Taranaki), 15-21, 21-19. 21-17. L. C. Elliott (North Taranaki) beat G. D. Sanderson (Wanganui) and beat the second seeds O'Gorman and G. G. Kemp (Nelson) to reach the semi-finals of the veteran men's doubles.
