SPEAKING CONTEST
Gisborne Girl Wins Cup
Janet Zame, of St Mary’s College, Gisborne, won the Anthony Eden Cup in the secondary schools public speaking contest organised by the Royal Overseas . League last evening. In doing so, she evened the score. In the 20 years of the competition it has been won 10 times by boys, and Miss Zame became the tenth girl to win.
Another girl, Vivian Low, of Palmerston North Girls’ High School, was second, and lan Mac Ewan, of Timaru Boys’ High School, and John Boyce, of St Bede’s College, were third.
The topic for the 13 finalists was “Britain’s Role in the Changing Commonwealth.” The finals were judged by Mr B. McClelland, a Christchurch barrister, and Mr W, J. Gardner, reader in history at the University of Canterbury. Mr McClelland said the judges considered the standard of speaking was extremely high. It was very much better, he said, than the standard of children of the same age in his generation. At their age he had nothing like their speaking ability or their skill in preparing their material.
