NEW NAME PROPOSED
Wellington Head
Perano Head is likely to be the new name of the headland in Cook Strait at present known as Wellington Head. The headland is on Arapawa Island, immediately northeast of the Tory Channel entrance.
Notice of the New Zealand Geographic Board’s intention to assign place names to numerous landmarks throughout New Zealand is given in the latest issue of the Gazette. Any person may object to the proposed names before November 15. If no objections are received, the names will become final at that date. The name proposed for the new construction township site in the Upper Waitaki River basin, between the Ohau and the Twizel Rivers, is Twizel. The township is in the Strachey survey district. Unusual names have been selected for two mountain features. An area in the Tararua Range at present known only by map reference will be called Dress Circle, and a narrow neck of ice between the Upper Bonar and the Maud Francis Glaciers in the Otago district will be called Flight Deck.
