“Best Scheme In N.Z.”
The scheme was the outcome of 10 years of Serious thought and planning, and was now transferred to the councils for their consideration, said the chairman (Mr G. D. Griffiths), when the authority discussed the proposals. “We want this scheme to be the best in New Zealand,” he said. “We hear talk of other cities stopping and changing their thinking, but here, thinking has been continuous and had kept up-to-date.” When Commander H. J. A. Lynch asked if enough attention had been paid to cyclists, and especially to schoolchildren, the Director of Planning (Mr C. B. Millar) said that they had not been neglected. Answers were now coming in to questionnaires sent to schools.
Cr G. D. Hattaway (City Council) said that the National Roads Board would have to give more in subsidies and grants to Christchurch. This had been done in the north. Without it, local bodies would meet problems of paying for the work out of rates.
