Splendid Ice Hockey Win
Pirates came from behind to defeat Rangers. 5-4, in an untidy but exciting match at the Centaurus ice rink last evening.
P. Ellis (Rangers) was ordered from the ice during the second half, when J. Dale (Pirates) was illegally tackled during a possible scoring movement. Later in the game Dale was also sent off when tempers flared.
S. Walters (Rangers) was first to score, when the puck was centred by K. Stevenson. The Rangers’ forward line of Walters. Stevenson and J. Hanning controlled the first half of the game. Pirates’ play was unsettled and their passes were poor, and their shots at goal lacked power. Pirates began to show some co-ordination when P. Willman and M. Cotter defeated the Rangers defence and Cotter goaled. Rangers then scored two excellent quick goals by the Canadians, Walters and Stevenson. Both goals came from power shots from well out. With Rangers ahead 4-1, P. Willman led Pirates’ revival. He played a sound game and without him Pirates certainly would have lost. After several strong moves Pirates scored two goals. Rangers led 4-3 at half-time. Five minutes after play had begun Ellis was sent off and Willman (Pirates) goaled. A minute later he put Pirates ahead when he goaled from a misfield by *S. Pluck (Rangers). Rangers made attack after attack, but could not penetrate.
Scores. —Pirates 5: P. Willman 2, M. Cotter, B. Dando and J. Dale. Rangers 4: S. Walters 2, J. Hanning, K. Stevenson. Umpires: Messrs B. Guy and S. Hurd.
