TROTTING Maida Million In Fine Trial At Methven

Maida Million and Bewitched, rivals in the two-mile Avon Handicap at Addington Raceway on Saturday week, showed dash to win their heats of the free-for-all at trials held yesterday at Methven.

Maida Million followed Stereo Scott just after the start of the first heat of the free-for-all with Palman and Gold Heritage handy. Happy Ending was slow away, while Break Through was tailed off.

Maida Million raced clear about the furlong post and was not fully extended to win by two lengths from Toby Brigade, with the same distance to Happy Ending, which finished boldly. Maida Million paced her last half mile in 1:3, a smart trial for her engagement at the New Brighton meeting. She was beaten narrowly by Barr-

Jiill in the Four-year-old Stakes on the first day of the national meeting. Toby Brigade, which has not raced for about three years, made a bold showing for his placing, as also did Happy Ending, which may resume racing at either the New Brighton meeting on September 21 or the Ashburton Flying Stakes early in October.

Golden Fleece, a big disappointment at Addington last week, made up ground for fourth, ahead of Golden Splendour and Laplander. . Bewitched trailed Double Step for much of the second heat and then finished boldly to win by a neck from the strong-finishing Battle Star. Both horses look in great heart. Bewitched paced her last half-mile in 1:4 3-5. She was an unlucky fourth in the Four-year-old Stakes.

Double Step held on for third, ahead of Bay Boa which made up ground, Stylish Major, which finished under a good hold, and Cantor.

Two-year-olds

Rossina, a gelding by Bachelor Hanover from Hey Day in M. Holmes’s team, showed great ability when he won the second heat of the two-year-old parade. He paced the six

furlongs in the very fast time of 1:39, the last half-mile in 1:5.

Rossina and a filly by Bachelor Hanover from Riviera in D. P. Grice’s team, vied for the lead in the early stages. Rossina drew out from his rival over the last furlong and a half and coasted to the post with three lengths to spare. The Bachelor Hanover filly was five lengths in front of Miss Spark, a filly by Lumber Dream from Ignition. She made ground towards the finish to shade Sydney James, a gelding by Johnny Globe from Omylight, and Sam Tryax, a gelding by Lucky Tryax from Preferable. Lustre Boy, a promising colt by Fallacy from Bonnie Lustre, the dam also of Lustre Scott, won the other heat In 1:44, the last half-mile in 1:8. He won by a nose from a colt by Garrison Hanover from Dillon’s Advice, with Eldonna, a filly by King Creed from Virtuous, in third place, clear of a colt by Bachelor Hanover from Ruling Caste, and Blue Spark, a colt by Spark Gap from Blue Adios.

Five horses managed to record 3:26 or faster for 12 furlongs in four heats of the

qualifying test race. The fastest time of 3:28 4-5 was returned by the promising three-year-old, Prince Forbes, a colt by Hi Lo’s Forbes from Globe Princess in O. E. Hooper’s Rakaia team. Prince Forbes shaded another promising pacer, Morano Lad, a member of J. C. Nordqvist’s Methven team.

Kings’ Size, a gelding by King Creed from Sporting Lady, won the first heat in 3:24 2-5, beating Little Marvel, a member of C. J. McLaughlin’s Methven team. Another member of the same team, Manaroa, was the only runner to qualify in the fourth heat. Other smart runs were returned by Kyrac, Ebby Globe, Sleeman, Global Hall, Yankee Dandy, and Chevalier.
