Greymouth Cub Has Profit Of $66

"The Press” Special Service

GREYMOUTH.

"The Greymouth Jockey Club would be one of the few racing clubs with a credit balance last year." the presi> dent of the club (Mr E. C. Berry) said at the annual meeting on Monday night. Although the profit was only $66, Mr Berry said that in the present economic climate it was a credit for any club in the country to show a profit. He said that, had the club raced on four days, it would have had a debit balance of between $2OOO and $3OOO. • Under the present method of T.A.B. payments, the more days you race on, the more mo'ney you lose," he said. Regarding the question of amalgamation, the president said there were 23 permits on the West Coast which catered for a voting population of about 16.000.

"Trying to maintain six courses on the West Coast is. I feel, just a little bit too much."

The treasurer, Mr L. S. Robertson. maintained there would be little racing on the West Coast in five years unless clubs combined. He felt it was up to the Racing Conference to give a lead on the matter. The secretary, Mr R. F. Fitzgerald, said good trophies were expected to be donated for all 16 races on the club’s two-day centennial programme in late November. He said that the meeting was attracting widespread interest. One of the trophies was a $3OO gold cup. while another gift was a case of champagne "so that the winners could celebrate in an appropriate manner." Varied opinions were expressed in regard to whether

or not trotting events would be reintroduced on the club’s programme. Mr Berry was re-elected unopposed as president for a tenth term. The committee is: Messrs R. F. Brlmicombe, A. C. Bruhn, A. Cameron, R. J. Cowan, M. A. Coughlan, S. W. Gillman, J. J. Guerin, W. H. Meade, M. J. Minehan, J. J. O’Donnell, S. A. O’Neil, C. H. Richards. L. S. Robertson, K. D. Tomlinson.

Mr F. Congreve was re-elected auditor.
