University Regains Lead In Squash
Another default, this time by Officers Club, last night robbed the Division I squash rackets competition of much of its interest.
By defaulting to University i Officers Club enabled it to regain the lead from Christchurch 11. This leaves only Christchurch II and University with any chance of winning the competition. The points are: University 47, Christchurch II 45, Officers, Christchurch I 30. Collegiate 28. B. V. Hamilton is now the province’s top player, after a win over J. H. N. Pine in four games.
Hamilton deserved his victory as he tried, even though with only moderate success, to play constructively. Pine on the other hand seemed to be waiting for things to i click.
Only occasionally did the 'match reach the standard expected from these two. Too often their drives were overhit, played carelessly and to little purpose. The speedy D. G. Hamilton took the first game off L. G. Milne, but from then on found his opponent’s variation of pace too difficult to handle.
Playing precise, straightforward squash, G. Hargreaves proved too sound for
J. E. Mcßride. He made few errors and kept the ball tight on the walls. Christchurch I v. Collegiate B. V. Hamilton beat J. H. N. Pine, 9-5, 9-6, 7-9, 10-8; L. G. Milne beat D. G. Hamilton, 5-9, 9-1, 9-2, 9-1; G. Hargreaves beat J. S. Mcßride, 10-8, 9-1, 9-3; N. W. Herd beat P. R. Sawtell by default. Christchurch won by 10 points to 0.
