MOTION AGAINST RUSSIANS OUT
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 27.
A motion seeking to block invitations to representatives of the U.S.S.R. to functions of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce was withdrawn after discussion at the chamber’s council meeting tonight.
A council member, Mr J. R. Greenfield, moved that “up to and including the next annual dinner, or until this motion is rescinded, no representative of the U.S.S.R is to be invited to any of our functions without prior approval of this council by means of a resolution of
which notice has been given.” The motion was seconded but another council member, Mr H. E. Smith, said that while he sympathised with Mr Greenfield’s views, the council had never attempted such discrimination before.
“We are a business group. I don’t think we would get far if we suggested to our members that we stop trading with the Soviet Union.”
Other members expressed the same view and Mr Greenfield, saying he had no wish to embarrass the council, withdrew the motion.
