To Plan Growth Up To 1978-79

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 26.

When the National Development Conference opens its threeday session tomorrow it will have as its objective what must be done to achieve a satisfactory rate of economic growth in the next 10 years.

From the conference, which will establish an overall target for increase, various committees with specialised functions will consider their target contributions, and the conference will be reconvened in May next year to see how the objectives can be reached. The session’s main concern [will be the report of a tariget rate of national growth for the periods ending 197273 and 1978-79.

Unless they are amended by the conference, the targets committee’s recommendation on individual contributions to be made by each of the productive sectors, such as agriculture, horticulture, forestry, manufacturing and tourism, will become the provisional exportearning targets. The targets committee, which says its recommendations are both a guide and a challenge to the conference, has Mr A. R. Low, governor of the Reserve Bank, as chairman. Members are:—Dr G. B. Philpott, director of the Agricultural Economics Research Unit, Lincoln College, Messrs J. G. Pryde, secretary of Federated Farmers, and J. W. Rowe, director of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research.
