“Young Maori Of The Year”

WELLINGTON, Aug. 25.
The 34-year-old son of the late Maori member of Parliament. Mr S. Watene, was named “Young Maori Man of the Year” at a reception in Wellington on Saturday evening. He is Mr N. Watene, a former schoolteacher, who succeeded his father as welfare officer at the Gear Meat Company, Petone, in 1964. Mr Watene, married, with three children, is president of the Ngati-Muturangi Maori Club, chairman of the Petone West School Committee, and an honorary Maori welfare officer. The Ombudsman (Sir Guy Powles) announced the judge’s decision. The “Young Maori Woman of the Year," was Mrs L. Brown, who had been chosen by the Maori Women’s Welfare League. Mr Watene and Mrs Brown received $lOOO in prizes and special trophies.
