Warning To Signers Of Czech Manifesto

(M.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright)

VIENNA, August 25.

Prague Free Radio tonight warned Czechoslovaks who signed the anti-conserva-tive “2000 words manifesto” last June to go into hiding immediately as occupation forces were planning to round them up tonight.

The clandestine radio station called on Prague citizens to do everything .in their

power to help signatories of the controversial manifesto. The manifesto warned against a take-over bid by conservative elements in Czechoslovakia and urged the young Communist Party leader, Mr Alexander Dubcek. and his supporters to continue with their liberalisation drive while there was still time.

The document, published by the outspoken writers’ magazine, “Literarni Listy,” was signed by scores of leading writers, artists and intellectuals.

The radio station said that defiant Czechoslovaks had not lost their humour even under the muzzles of Russian tanks. In the true tradition of the Good Soldier Schweik, Prague citizens were putting up posters tonight saying, “Lenin, wake up, Brezhnev has gone mad.”
