A.S.R.S. Opens Talks On Skill Margins
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 26.
The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants today opened discussions with the Railways Department on the restoration of margins for skill.
The erosion of the margins in recent years was the cause of the partial ban on goods operations called by the A.S.R.S. earlier this month. The union lifted the ban after the Government assured
it that the restoration of margins for semi-skilled groups would be considered.
In the present negotiations a limited number of occupational designations is being used as a test case for future negotiations. A spokesman for the A.S.R.S. said the proposals put forward by the union today represented a clear statement of its viewpoint on margins.
He declined to say which occupations had been selected for negotiation.
Because of the involvement of senior Railways Department officials in the National Development Conference this week, the union did not expect the department to comment on its proposals for some days.
