Defeat In Cup Badminton

Auckland beat Canterbury, 12-4, in the New Zealand final of the division II badminton provincial championship for the R.S.L. Cup.

Auckland elected to play the singles matches first and won seven of them. Only B. G. Hadlee, who played splendidly at the top of the men’s singles, could win a match and Canterbury went to the doubles .matches facing an impossible task. Hadlee commanded his opponent K. Grantham in both games. In the second game Hadlee was behind 8-9 but suddenly took control, angling the shuttle across the court and leaving Grantham stranded. Even when he was on defence Hadlee’s recovery shots often won him the rally. Too Polished

The other Canterbury singles players were unable to cope with the more polished Aucklanders. Too often the shuttle was calmly lifted back to their opponent without regard for a fine placement.

B. J. Whyte won a game from K. Young with an aggressive attitude but had the third game wrested from him after he appeared likely to win. Mrs Miller look set for a quick win when she won her first game 11-1 but Miss Mills won the second one and was fitter for the third game. Good Pairing Hadlee combined with Wylie in the doubles and the pair won after playing poorly in the first game. They shed their defensive attitude and although both made positional errors their attack was sufficient to unnerve Grantham and P. Gorringe and they easily won the third game, 15-5. Reid and L. Robinson gave Canterbury their easiest win in the doubles match. Robinson, who had difficulty keeping the shuttle in his singles match, found his old form and the pair

repeatedly found gaps tn Auek land’s positional play. Results:—
