COMPLICATIONS IN CONTAINERISA TION

WELLINGTON, August 26.

New Zealand’s conversion to containerisation could be complicated by its seasonal trade and because a lot of its exports needed refrigeration, Mr P. N. Dawson, a divisional director of the London-based Metro Consultant Group, said tonight.

The Government has commissioned the group to make a study of alternative shipping and transport handling systems for New Zealand.

A verbal report will be given to the Government in January and this will be followed by a formal report, probably a month later.

Mr Dawson will return to London at the end of this week, but Mr S. F. Lister, a senior consultant with the group, will be in. the country about four months. Mr Lister with Mr Dawson tonight. Mr Dawson said that from the Molyneaux report there would seem to be a case for containerisation of at least part of New Zealand’s trade. “Whether this should take

in all the trade is something to be studied." Mr Dawson said it was estimated that a new container service could be introduced within three years once approval had been given. But this estimate had been made when containerisation was somthlng new; and it might now be possible to reduce the time, he said. No other system had shown itself more economical than containerisation, he said. Mr Lister will be assisted in his survey by representatives from tiie Transport Department and the Transport Commission.
