Racial Violence In Five Cities

White youths hurled stones and firecrackers at Negro motorists in a Chicago suburb and State police had a gun battle with militant white rightists in Connecticut at the week-end in the nation’s latest episodes of summer violence, United Press International reported.
Sixty-seven white youths were arrested in the Chicago suburb of Blue Island on Friday mgLt when bands of roving whites beat Negroes A crowd of nearly 100 gathered in a parking lot and threw rocks and firecrackers at Negroe motorists.
The harassment of Negroes was in apparent retaliation for the slaying of two young white men in a parking lot on Thursday. Three young Negroes have been arrested in connection with the killings. A policeman was shot early yesterday after a nightdong outbreak in an predominantly Negro section of Evansville, Indiana. Looting, fire bombing and bottle throwing resulted in injuries to four people in a Negro section of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Negroes stoned passing cars in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Six people were injured at
Voiuntown, Connecticut, when police traded shots with a raiding party attempting to destroy a pacifist encampment sponsored by the Connecticut Committee for Nonviolent Action.
The masked, heavily-armed raiders were said to be members of the rightist paramilitary “Minutemen” organisation.
The injured included a policeman, a pacifist and four raiders.
