German Week
Sir, —The diatribe by “Quercus” reveals a disregard of the effects of wars of this century, and also why It is still possible to persuade people to go thousands of miles overseas to kill people like themselves that they have no quarrel with. By hindsight we know that naval, commercial, and colonial rivalries were primary causes of World War I; major results were the Bolshevik revolution and the impossibility of making Germany pay. Through a real fear of communism Hitler was widely armed, financed, and encouraged; ths same year that the New Zealand Government was refused a £2m loan by Britain she lent Hitler £l7m. My sympathy extends to my comrades, all combatants, and to civilian causualties and miseries, which arc increasing at such a high ratio with every successive war.—Yours, etc., SETH NEWELL. August 24, 1968.
