Riccarton Racecourse
Sir,— Surely ft is about time that the facilities at Riccarton racecourse were improved. Over the recent race week there was not a decent meal to be had by the public. In- the bar, glasses were dipped in and out of a sink of Water all day. There was still lipstick on some
glasses, and It seems the safest thing to do is to get a dean glass and keep It in one’s pocket all day. The women’s toilets are a disgrace, and seemed not to be cleaned from one race day to the next. I am not the only one to notice all this because I have heard a number of people comment on these disgraceful facilities, and if it looks like this to local people, what does it look like to visitors?—Yours, etc., HYGIENE.
August 20. 1968. [The secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club (Mr F. T. H. Bell) replies: “Modern glass-washing machines are installed in all bars at Riocarton Racecourse. If ‘Hygiene* cares to inform me of the particular bar to which the complaint refers, I shall take the matter up with the club’s caterers, who employ the barmen. I can assure ’Hygiene’ that not only are the women’s toilets thoroughly cleaned between race days, but every effort is made to maintain them in a clean condition during each race day.”]
