Eastern Suburbs Take Gore Cup

■astarn Suburb! tcsrad 2S paint! In tha llrM 22 mlnutai at tha sacand hair ta avarrun Hornby In tha grand Anal ar tha Cora Cup (bottom tour) Rugby league competition at tha Shew Ground, on Saturday.

A fine undemanding between the forward, and backs enabled Eastern Suburbs to take play into Hornby’! territory, switching the attacks from one side to the other to beat the defence and Initiate tries. Hornby, in comparison, was unable to use its adavntage when near the Eastern Suburbs, several tries being missed by poor handling and passing, The Idas was only Hornby's ninth in the 64 matches between the clubs since 1946: Eastern Suburbs’ margin of victory was its biggest against a Hornby team since it won, 24-5, tn 1948. In the first halt Hornby, the champion senior team since 1964, held a territorial advantage and led, 8-7, at the Interval. A fine goal from half-way by T. Williams (Hornby) a minute after the resumption preceded the Eastern Suburbs scoring burst which led to Hornby’s first loss to that club since 1964.

The experienced R. H. Turton and P. Robinson played an important role in Eastern Suburbs' success. It was Turton who fittingly scored the best of the six tries, a magnificent effort that was started by Robinson well inside his own half and swept downfield before L. H. Tehuia. when apparently cornered, sent the defence the wrong, way with a deft reverse pass.

Tehuia, backing up at all time, and kicking six goals from eight attempts, and the rugged P. Tainui also played well in the Eastern Suburbs pack. P. Kranklln held K. M. Neiman to 17-20 tn the scrums. Apart from Robinson, G. R. Cooksley, playing in the centres and diving past many tacklers with his dashing runs, and J, Lawrence were the most lmeressive backs, matched only y the strong-running B. W. Langton.

P. J. Tongue and G. Woodgate were the best members of a Hornby forward pack that wa, inclined to be indecisive when near the Eastern Suburbs line in the first half.

. Tainui (two), Tehuia, Lawrence, Robinson and Turton scored tries for Eastern Suburbs and Tehuia kicked goals.

Williams kicked six goals for Hornby from eight attempts. The referee (Mr T. C. Houston) awarded Hornby 11 of the 14 penalties.
