RAILCAR SERVICE
Denial OI “Failure”
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 25 The Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon denied that the up-graded rail-car tried out on a Hamilton-Auck-land service over the last few months had in itself been a failure.
“The trial has simply shown that there is insufficient demand on this particular route for this type of service,” he said. Mr Gordon was commenting on a report which suggested the experimental luxury rail-car was a failure. The 84-seat twin-coach railcar was refurbished throughout with new aircraft-style seats and carpets, and was equipped for serving light refreshments, before it was introduced on the HamiltonAuckland run. The Minister announced on Wednesday that it would be taken off the run on September 13, and would be put on a thrice-weekly Auckland to Wellington daytime run.
