Good Effort By South In Annual Table Tennis

The South Island men’s table tennis team put up its best performance since 1947 when it lost, seven matches to five, its annual contest with the North Island at Cowles Stadium on

Saturday evening. As expected, the powerful North Island women’s quartet were too accomplished for the South, winning 10 matches to two, but Miss Y. M. Fogarty (Otago) beat the national women’s singles champion, Miss D. L. Wade (Auckland). In her debut Miss G. M. Kemp (Nelson) beat the New Zealand representative, Mrs C. E. Tadema (Hamilton). Although Mrs Tadema was not well, Miss Kemp’s win was merited. B. A. Foster (Otago) took another step towards regaining his men’s singles crown when he beat two of bis strongest rivals, M. W. Borlase (Wellington) and A. R Tomlinson (Auckland). He gave Borlaee no chance, winning 21-8, 21-18—but TomUnion put up atouter rebalance than his form earlier this season indicated. Foster won 21-17. 18-21, 21-17.

Tomlinson led Foster, 15-13, In the firxt game, but Foster’s chop unsettled him and he lost the last five points. In the second Tomlinson hit fine forehands and Foster sprinted to retrleve remarkably well, but generally the game was won close to the table.

Ling Nan Ming, a Malaysian (Canterbury) beat Borlase. but the failure of J. Armstrong and V. N. Brightwell (Canterbury) to win a singles disrupted South’s bid for the men's title In both games Borlase led Ling Nan Ming, but each time the Malaysian recovered to win. Borlase led 18-11 in the first, and 12-7 and 18-12 In the second, but he could not hold his advantage. ~ ' Against Tomlinson Ling Nan Ming made far too many errors to be a threat. Chance Missed Inconsistency cost Brightwell a eood chance of beating G. V. Wilkinson (Auckland) after he had taken the first game, but he was unequal to the hardhitting T. J. O’Carroll (Northland). Armstrong would have placed better had he used a pimpled rather than a smooth, sponged surface on his bat. The southern men did well to win two of the four doubles and could well have won another. , , Miss Foearty hit particularly well against Miss Wade and reached 15 and IS against the six-times national singles champion. Mrs N. Traill. Mrs T. May (Canterbury) also played well against Mrs Tra'ill, but could not match Miss Wade. Before playing Miss Kemp. Mrs Tadema had to contend with another new South Island representative. Miss C. M. Borck (Marlborough). Miss Borck played soundly to take the first game, but the greater guile of Mrs Tadema was the deciding factor. The fourth member of the northern team. Miss J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley) won both her singles without being seriously threatened. Results were:— MEH North 7, South S M. W. Borlase lost to B. A. Foster, 8-21, 18-21: lost to Ling Nan Ming, 18-21, 18-21.
