Canterbury’s Upset Defeat In Hockey

GORE. A major upset on the first day of the.. New Zealand women’s hockey championship, which began on Saturday, was the defeat of Canterbury A, one of the favoured teams for K Cup honours.

Canterbury won the trophy in 1965 and 1966. but did not

finish In a place last year when four of its players were touring with the New Zealand team:

Canterbury went down to Waikato, 1-0, in the morning. Later, Waikato was beaten by Otago A, 3-0, which pointed to Otago as a likely prospect for the championship. Earlier, Otago had thrashed Manawatu, 12-0, and Auckland B and Otago A were the only unbeaten teams in section B. They will meet this morning. Section A promises to be a close contest, and at the end of the first day there were three unbeaten teams —Auckland A, Eastern Southland A and Hawke’s Bay. Eastern Southland was runner-up to Otago in the K Cup final last year. The clash between Auckland A and Hawke’s Bay this morning will have a big bearing on the result of the section. Results were:
