Junior Hard Court Finals Finished
Three attractive and well-fought singles finals ended the Anderson and Hill junior hard court tennis tournament at Wilding Park on Saturday morning in the only pleasant weather of the tournament.
N. Pattinson won the under 17 boys’ singles, G. Iredale won the under 17 girls' singles, and A. Meates won the under 15 girls’ singles.
Seeded third to the first seeding of his opponent, N. Dillon, Pattinson, son of a former prominent Canterbury player, R. G. Pattinson, lost the first set, 1-6, but gained control after that for 6-2, 6-4.
Dillon played very carefully at the beginning and made few errors, but he was not as consistent later as Pattinson’s attack became stronger, and in the third set Pattinson applied the greater pressure. Both stroked well, and there is title between them.
Perhaps there was even less between Iredale and P. Bam-
ford in the under 17 girls’ final which had two 6-5 acts. Iredale was the second seed, and Bamford, who is ranked second on the national under 15 list, was fourth.
They played competently and pleasantly and appeared, unlike some, tennis opponents, to be the best of friends. The slightly built Bamford was determined enough, and she chased every ball, but Iredale’s shots were slightly stronger, and she gained a slight advantage with her swinging drives and an occasional sortie to the net. Meates won the under 15 girls singles more comfortably. She played steadily to the corners, and the Ellesmere girl, G. Skilling, was not moving quickly enough to get to them. The score was 6-2. 6-3.
