CARS UNDER WATER
Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 21.
Cars in the vehicle deck of the Wahine appeared to be all heaped together, the salvage chief of the United Salvage Proprietary (Sir John Williams) said today. Sir John Williams, who flew to Wellington from Melbourne last week, is living in the chartered coaster Holmpark, which is moored alongside the Wahine as the salvage headquarters. The removal of the cars would start early next week, he said. Two small holes have been cut in the forward and aft end of the port side of the hull, which is above the water. These have enabled workmen to get inside the vehicle deck, which has an air space of about 12ft between the side and the water at high tide. All the cars are submerged.
Students’ Moot.—Two University of Canterbury law students, Messrs J. I). Atkinson and G. Pankhurst, won the F. B. Adams Cup in the moot section of the New Zealand Universities’ Arts Festival, held in Auckland. Mr Atkinson was described as the best speaker at the moot, which was contested by representatives of the Auckland, Victoria, Otago and Canterbury universities.
