HAGLEY OVAL

$lOOO Will Be Spent

The Hagley Park Grounds Committee will let a $lOOO contract for the top-dress-ing, levelling and seeding of Hagley Oval within the next few days. Given favourable weather, the committee expects the work to be completed before the cricket season begins. At the end of the coming season a complex of field drains will be laid.

“The success of the topdressing operation will be very dependent on the weather in the next six weeks,” the committee’s secretary (Mi R. J. B. West) said last evening. The wicket blocks are in normal winter condition,” he said. “The surface water has now almost gone.” Mr West said the topdressing would fill the hollows in front of the sports centre and those between the two rows of wicket blocks in the centre of the oval.

Hagley Oval became a lake after the erection of the Canterbury Cricket Association’s sports centre had spoilt the natural drainage. Mr West refused to say who was paying for the top-dress-ing and whether the committee would let the C.C.A. use its car to pick up the golf balls next winter, after the drains had been laid.
