Rolleston Avenue Parking

Sir, —There is a heavy demand for parking in Rolleston Avenue. The traffic department set aside an area for students with a sign, “No stopping except for motor-cycles and power cycles.” During holidays the demand for student parking is negligible while that for parking by visitors to museum and gardens increases. Yet as I sped past last May to celebrate a wedding I was shocked to see a traffic officer ticketing offending cars although there was neither a motor-cycle nor student in sight. Now the August holidays are here I find that the pernicious practice continues. —Yours, etc., S. V. R YOUNG. August 16, 1968.

[The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “The demand for parking facilities in this section of Rolleston Avenue is undoubtedly heavy, but it must be appreciated that not all road users drive motorcars and this particular motor-cycle area was set aside fop all motor-cyclists, not just for students. During vacation time it would be anticipated that the art gallery, museum, and gardens would generate a demand for the parking of motor-cycles. The situation will be kept under review and further consideration will be given if found warranted.”]
