Australians Blamed

LONDON, Aug. 19
A master-mind shoplifter in Australia may be the planner behind the gang of Australians preying on British stores, the "Sun" reports. There is evidence of careful organisation behind the gang's escapades and the methods used not only to steal goods but to dispose of the loot, the newspaper says.
More than 150 Australians are known to have taken part in shoplifting expeditions and bank raids in Britain in the last four or five years. Losses by the big stores are running so high that store detectives will meet in London this week to consider the problem. One solution, suggested by Mr Richard Brindley, security manager of an Oxford Street store, is that the Home Office should refuse work permits to Australians convicted of shoplifting.
