ARANUI H.S. ROLL

Policy On Late Entries

The Aranui Hieh Schoo’ will peg its enrolments of third-form nupils for next vear at 398 and any after that will be placed on a waiting list until a total of 418 justifies an extra class. The board of governors was told yesterdav by the headmaster (Mr W. J. A. Brittenden) that 370 firm enrolments had been received by the end of the second term and another nine were already expected. The minimum roll to justify 12 third forms plus a terminating vocational class was 378 so the school should “just make it.” Mr Brittenden said the action of three other schools I in taking an extra class each had reduced the number who j might have come to the | schools which still had vacancies.

“It would seem that Christchurch enrolments have been effected much more smoothly and satisfactorily than ever before," said Mr Brittenden. The present roll was 949 with a net loss of 87 since the beginning of the year. Most of these wanted to obtain work in a time of financial difficulty. Many left for suitable assured employment but two boys and two girls had no immediate prospects. Nine pupils were unwise to have left, considering their potential. Advice was received that the Educaiton Department had let the Aranui library contract to the J. J. Construction Company and work would start soon.

Sketch plans were considered for a gymnasium with a floor of 96ft by 73ft in a building 115 ft long. The extra area will be used for dressing rooms and storage. Mr Brittenden said this would be larger than most Christchurch school gymnasiums but the ancillary rooms were considered essential by the committee. The building would qualify for a subsidy but it might be necessary to complete the shell first and finish other sections as extra funds became available. The board also considered plans for a second woodwork shop.
