MEATLESS DAYS?
A suggestion that beef consumption should be limited on the New Zealand market—perhaps by meatless days, as in the Argentine—was made at the conference of the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural Science, at Lincoln College, yesterday. Mr P. Blomfield, technical director of Potash (N.Z.), Ltd, in a paper on export marketing of agricultural products, had said that far more attention should be given to beef.
“It is unfortunate that New Zealanders eat half the beef they produceeven though it is fat beef.” he said. “I think that it would be
desirable to limit its consumption on the New Zealand market”
When the Argentine decided to increase beef exports, laid Mr Blomfield, it had meatless days—and perhaps New Zealand should do the same. Alternatively, lamb could be promoted on the New Zealand market and the price of beef kept high to the New Zealand consumer.
The export market was dominated by lamb, “but it seems astonishing that the only person who promotes lamb on the domestic market is the local butcher—on the few occasions when he cares to do so,” Mr Blomfield said.
