Junior Tennis To Start Today
Early activity in junior tennis for the 1968-69 season will begin at Wilding Park today with the opening of the annual Anderson and Hill junior hard-court tournament.
There is an entry of nearly 120, mainly from Canterbury but with strong parties from North Otago and Southland. As usual, the tournament is in under-19, under-17, under-15 and under-13 grades. However, the under-19 grade, drew such small entries that the girls’ section—in which the two leading juniors, R. Legge and R. Dillon, were the only names—had to be abandoned, and the boys’ doubles will be played as a roundrobin. The notable players in the boys’ section are the province’s top junior, R. Webster, and M. Morrison, the 1967 secondary schools run-ner-up. Webster won the August singles last year. The rest of the sections have been well supported and will provide interest from those players who have changed age groups for the new season. This is especially so in the under-17 girls’ singles where S. Moore and P. Bamford, winner and run-ner-up in the national under--15 singles last season, are now in the higher group and seeded behind K. Davey and G. Iredale, who won the national under-17 plate in Janik ary. The seedings are: Under 19. —Boys' singles: R. Webster 1, M. Morrison 2. Boys’ doubles: Round-robin. Under 17.—Boys’ singles: N. Dillon L B. Smyth 2, N. Pattinson 3. L. Smith (Southland) 4, G.
