Leading Squash Club Beaten

Christchurch II beat the leader, . University. 4-0, in the pnly match played in division one of the squash rackets competition last evening. Collegiate defaulted to Officers, and Christchurch I had the bye.

Christchurch II took the lead with 45 points, but as it has the bye next week its place at the top could go to University again.

Officers are lying third with 30 points, ’ closely followed by Collegiate 28 and Christchurch I 20.

University might well have gained four points from last evening’s match as both N. B. Ullrich and N. Rush went to five games and with luck at the right times might have won.

Promoted to top for Christchurch 11, S. C. Suckling played soundly to beat C. C. Kissllng. Kissling matched his more perienced opponent in the first game, maintaining a good length, which prevented Suckling from hitting, winners with his deadly forehand, but as the match progressed Sucklings tight play forced Kissling to hit short’, and Suckling won the third game without the loss of a point. R. D. Monk (Christchurch II)

looked well out of form, and was fortunate to scramble home against some enterprising play by the much younger Rush. Rush made many simple errors when the court was wide open for a winning drive, and failed to take the opportunities offered to make Monk run longer distances, which would have certainly assured him of victory. Monk deserved credit for a fine recovery from 2-8 down In the second game. For Christchurch 11, T. L. Williams showed improved form, although he dropped the second game to D. A. Garrett, who was making one of his rare appearances for University. Garrett still impresses as a fine striker of the ball, and it Is a pity that he does not devote more time to the game. Easily the best match of the evening was that between Ullrich and R. Taylor. Ullrich quickly took the first game and, after a struggle, the second. Then it was all Taylor, who looked clearly superior until one-all in the fifth game, when Ullrich produced some amazingly unorthodox angled shots and some fine, deep cross-court shots which had Taylor in trouble-. Ullrich had four match points at 8-7, but was unable to clinch it. allowing Taylor «o regain the initiative.
