Warning To Shopkeepers
Shopkeepers and businessmen In Christchurch should take elementary precautions when accepting cheques from customers not known to them, said Detective-Sergeant E. J. Stackhouse, the Christchurch crime prevention officer yesterday. He said that offences involving false pretences last month numbered 29, compared with 28 in June; this was double the number of any month in the previous two years. Last month 40 vehicles had been converted—23 of them left unlocked and with the key in the ignition switch, and the rest left unlocked. Thefts from cars reported last month numbered 80, compared with 103 in June, but thefts from cars and converted vehicles accounted for more than $45,000 of the 859,500 of property and money taken dishonestly last month.
