Maddox Attacks U.N.

(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) ATLANTA (Georgia),

August 20.

Governor Lester Maddox, of Georgia, declaring that the Democratic Party would lose the race for the White House if it failed to nominate him for President, denounced the United Nations today as “a Communist - orientated organisation which is actively seeking one world government.”

During a day of speeches, news conferences and interviews, Governor Maddox also said he was in sympathy with the goals of the John Birch Society, and that he agreed extremism in defence of liberty was no vice. The latter view was expressed by the Republican candidate, Mr Barry Goldwater, during his campaign for the Presidency in 1964. Georgia was one of six States Mr Goldwater carried. Governor Maddox’s attack on the United Nations was made at Fort McPherson, in a speech to the Armed Forces Management Association. “The voice of the United Nations has never been spoken for the rights and freedoms we enjoy as Americans,” said Governor Maddox. “This may be because no fewer than 16 persons identified in sworn testimony either as Communist agents or Communist dupes had a major role in drawing up the original United Nations Charter. “Today its voice has become the voice of Communist propaganda, distributed liberally to the undeveloped countries, and these world-

savers, some of whom are new to shoes, dare to sit in judgment on the complex internal affairs of nations 10 times their age. “The policy of the United Nations is finally to have one world government” Governor Maddox's remarks on the John Birch Society and extremism came in response to questions during a news conference. “The society ... is opposed

to America being buried by, communism. I am, too,” he said. “They (society members) want the free enters prise stem to be preserved. They know we will wipe out more poverty in 1968 with this free enterprise system than national government can in the next 100 years. “They are opposed to our grandchildren living under communism, and I believe everyone in this room would be opposed to that” Governor Maddox repeated accusations that the Government was largely to blame for a breakdown of law and order and for riots and looting in American cities.

“The Justice Department is dishonest with the American people,” he said. “The Justice Department has been on the side of the violators.” Governor Maddox declared that Government poverty programmes had ignored poor people until they were ready to burn a town or shoot a policeman. “Most of the money has gone to the pinks, the punks, the politicians and the parasites,” he said.
