A long-term project aimed at the development of protein food products directly from pasture or forage crops had been started recently by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at Lincoln, Dr H. C. Smith said in his presidential address to the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural Science daypreliminary studies showed that there were very difficult problems involved in the extraction and processing of these products; nevertheless this project was still of considerable potential and one which should be steadily pursued. . x .. But a related project, the development of an export market in artificially dried herbage meals, such as lucerne meal, had an even greater market and far more immediate value. Research on efficient crops, harvesting and production methods should be expanded immediately to assist the establishment of these industries.
