Tour Of Aust. Galleries
A party of students from the Canterbury University School of Art, and some members of the Canterbury Society of Arts, left yesterday for a 12-day tour of Australian art galleries.
The party will pay particular attention to contemporary Australian painting, sculpture, and architecture, and will meet outside the galleries some of the artists whose work it will see in the galleries.
One of these is the sculptor, Clifford Last, who was in Christchurch earlier this year with some of his work for the Pan Pacific Arts Festival.
By coincidence the leader of the party, the Christchurch artist, Don Peebles, will be in Australia in time to see two of his works hung in an exhibition of paintings by five New Zealand artists selected for the Bonython Gallery. Sydney, by the Auckland Art Gallery. Mr Peebles will be the only
South Island artist represented in this exhibition; three of the others (Pat Hanly, Milan Mrkusich, and Ross Ritchie) are from Auckland, and the fifth, Gordon Walters, is from Wellington. The five-man show will probably be followed later this year by five one-man shows in the same gallery by New Zealand artists. Another exhibition task will
await Mr Peebles on his return from Australia: he has been asked by the Canterbury Society of Arts to compile an exhibition, for showing next year, of works by New Zealand painters. He has not yet booked gallery space for the exhibition, but he said he had some painters in mind and hoped to complete arrangements in November.
