Librarian Chosen
Mr J. E. D. Stringleman, the deputy-city librarian was appointed by -the Christchurch City Council last evening as chief librarian to succeed Mr R. N. O’Reilly, who has been appointed director of the New Zealand Library School.
After serving as a pilot with the Fleet Air Arm from 1941 to 1946, Mr Stringleman received a rehabilitation bursary, studying mainly at the Manchester Public Library. While he was in England he was offered a position as assistant librarian in Christchurch and returned to New Zealand in June, 1947.
He spent 1947 at the Library School, gaining the school’s certificate, and was granted an associateship of the New Zealand Library Association in 1956. Mr Stringleman became deputy city librarian when the City Council took over the library in 1948 and was in charge for two years from 1964 when Mr O’Reilly was overseas.
