Match Stopped
An under 7st 71b Rugby match between Christchurch A and High School Old Boys A at Straven Road was stopped before full time by the referee, Mr G. James, after some spectators, who had argued against his decisions throughout the game, became more abusive when Christchurch scored a try to take a 9-6 lead.
The Junior Advisory Board would discuss the matter when the referee’s report was received, the president (Mr J. A. Coleman) said last evening. The board might then make a recommendation to the Canterbury Rugby Union. During the match Mr James warned a spectator that he would order him from the ground if he continued his remarks. Christchurch was awarded a number of penalties as the game neared its end and at least twice was given extra ground when players made remarks to him. On another occasion, a penalty had been awarded to Old Boys near the Christchurch 'line but tbe decision was rescinded. When Christchurch scored some minutes from the end spectactors argued with each other and directed remarks and abuse at Mr James. He stopped the game after the conversion attempt had failed and was abused again by spectators as he left for the dressing rooms.
