Humber Not Tested
Humber and Might won hurdle races for North Island stables on the final day of the Grand National meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. The Hastings-owned and trained Humber made one act of the Sydenham Hurdles. He galloped strongly into the lead straight away, and established his winning margin of eight lengths with a bit to spare in the first half-mile. Mr T. C. Lowry’s eight-year-old came to the last jump with an unassailable lead, and the only remaining
interest in the race was whether Lordtuckey would outstay Scorn. He did. The fast pace on a summerlike track had Kelloman in difficulties some way out. His jumping deteriorated as the race progressed and he finished in a gap of six lengths behind Scorn. Might, a stablemate of Lordtuckey, completed a double in hack hurdle races at the meeting with an all-the-way win in the Styx Hurdles. Mr N. Beder’s six-year-old started the last five furlongs with a lead of five lengths and held that margin to the end. Skeltheen made a second return on his purchase price for his North Island owner, Mr J. R. Townsend by outstaying Lonvato for second. The race lost a lot of its interest when Etassem, one of the most competent South Island hurdlers in the field, crashed heavily at the second hurdle when trailing.
