Boy Killed In Hopper
(N.Z. Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Aug. 11. An 11-year-old boy was crushed to death in a metal hopper yesterday. He was David Bailey, of 58 Hocken Street.
It is believed that he was playing inside the hopper, which is situated below road level in Haywood Street. Police, Army, ambulance and fire brigade officials raced to the yard of Shiels Concrete Supplies, Ltd, Glen Road, when the alarm was raised shortly before noon.
A load estimated at five yards of metal had been deposited in the hopper from a truck, setting in motion the gravity fed conveyor belt, and the boy was dragged down by the weight of the metal.
Oxygen equipment was used to try to reach the boy from below the hopper; and the fire brigade's resuscitator was brought into use almost immediately, but without success.
